Research Projects

The Refugee Rights Unit is a member of the ‘Global Asylum Governance and the European Union’s Role’ (ASILE) project, funded by EU Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement No. 870787)  and led by Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

ASILE studies the interactions between emerging international protection systems and the United Nations Global Compact for Refugees (UN GCR), with particular focus on the European Union’s role. The aim of this project is to identify promising practices of international protection, and how these practices can inform the EU in implementing the United Nations’ Global Compact on Refugees and the Global Compact for Migration. The project focus on six case countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Jordan, South Africa, and Turkey.

Other Research Projects completed and ongoing cover topics such as: evaluating the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa and the SADC region; evaluating policy decisions of the South African government in their treatment of refugees in South Africa; and the amendments to the Refugees Act 130 of 1998.
